#FactsandStats: Diversity in Black Film

The increase in black film audiences is likely because of the amount of films released last year, that featured a prominent black cast or black actors in lead roles. And also how each film offered a different representation and story of blackness. Media and communication industries can’t expect to engage black demographics if they never represent and include them in stories. Think about the function of film beyond entertainment, it provides audiences a sense of escapism or aspiration. All of these things drive engagement.

  • Conducted by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a report revealed that the number of frequent African-American moviegoers nearly doubled to 5.6 million last year (2016), and that African-American moviegoers went an average of 4.2 times to the theatre, an increase over the 3.5 times they averaged in 2015.
